MIFFLINTOWN, Mary E. Lauver Culbertson, 86, of Mifflintown, (Arch Rock) died at 3:45 p.m., on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, surrounded by her family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 22, 1927, at Mifflintown (Cuba Mills) a daughter of the late Noah H. and Violet (Yocum) Yocum. Mary is survived by her husband Glen H. Culbertson, whom she married on May 23, 1992. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Joan (Lauver) Clark and her husband Ronald, of Mifflintown; 2 step-sons, Dr. Glen Culbertson, Jr., of Troy, NY, Dr. Edward Culbertson and his wife Carmen, of Plano, TX; 1 step-daughter Judy Reece and her husband Ned, of Bucyrus, O H; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Clark) Swartz, of Mifflintown, Troy Linn Clark and wife Kimberly, of Lewistown; five great-grandchildren, Chantz and Morgan Swartz, Parker, Hayden and Sophia Clark; five step grandchildren, Jacob, Noah, Isaac and Timothy Culbertson, all of Plano, TX, Sheryl Saunders, of Galion, OH; seven step great-grandchildren and five step great-great-grandchildren. One sister, Emma Jane Hart Pressler, preceded her in death. She was a member of the Arch Rock United Methodist Church and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nook. From the age of 15 she worked in a rug mill and later at various garment factories throughout the county, until retiring in 1987 from Juniata Garment, Mifflin. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting and sewing. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Mary and Glen spent six months of the year in Riverview, FL and six months at their home in Arch Rock. They traveled extensively and have many friends from all over the United States and Canada. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with the Rev. Charles Hershberger officiating. OBITUARY NOTICE MERRILL G. “GENE” METZGER RICHFIELD, Merrill G. “Gene” Metzger, 86, of Richfield (Evendale) died at 2:15 a.m., on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at his home. Born on December 10, 1927, in Lewistown, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Merrill Metzger, Mildred (Zimmerman) Metzger-Reever and his step father, the late James Reever. On November 25, 1950, he married his surviving wife, Orpha M. (Elsasser) Metzger, with whom he shared more than 63 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Todd A. Metzger, of Waynesboro and three brother-in-laws, Bill Elsasser, of Millerstown, Paul Elsasser, of Mt. Pleasant Mills and Kenneth Elsasser, of Richfield. Two brothers-in-law, Dean Elsasser, Charles “Chill” Elsasser and two sisters-in-law, Arlene Devlin and Evelyn Zeiders, preceded him in death. Mr. Metzger was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Cocolamus, who proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WW II in the European theater. He worked as a mason for many area contractors until retiring in 1990 from Vartan Construction Co., Harrisburg. “Gene” loved to hunt and fish, but spending time with his family brought him his greatest joy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Cocolamus with the Rev. Candace Arnold officiating. MIFFLINTOWN, Maxine E. Burchfield, 87, of Mifflintown (Mexico) died at 12:12 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Columbia Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville. Born on January 19, 1927 in Walker Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse P. and Edith M. (McBurney) Fry. Surviving are her children, Ronald F. Burchfield, of Dillsburg, Roger A. Burchfield and his wife Florence, of Mifflintown, Beth A. Burchfield, of New Berlin, and she leaves behind 4 grandchildren also 5 great-grandchildren. One son, Jesse Scott Burchfield, preceded her in death on November 11, 1981 and an infant son in infancy. Mrs. Burchfield was a 1945 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown and a member of the Mexico United Presbyterian Church. In 1987 she retired as a seamstress from Lyons Fashions, Mifflintown. Maxine was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan, who loved her dogs and playing cards; however her family was her utmost priority. At her request a celebration of her life will be held later in the spring. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown. EAST SALEM, Jack E. Dunn, 84, of East Salem died at 7:38 p.m., on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at his home. Born on September 26, 1930 in Delaware Twp., Juniata County, he was a son of the late Frank L. and Anna (Amey) Dunn. On June 9, 1950 he married his surviving wife, Almera M. (Willow) Dunn, with whom he shared more than 63 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Douglas Dunn and his wife Carrie, of Thompsontown, Tami Mays and her husband Jamie, of Ellicott City, MD, a sister, L. Jane Bassler, of East Salem and he leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Dunn, Jeremy Dunn, Jacki Mays, Julie Mays and Kristabelle Mays. Two brothers, Warren L. Dunn and Richard P. Dunn preceded him in death. Mr. Dunn worked briefly for the PA Railroad until proudly serving his county with the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict. After returning home from the service, Jack was employed as a mechanic by Regester’s Chevrolet, Inc., Thompsontown until retiring in 1988 with 34 years of service. After retiring he continued to work for Regester’s Chevrolet, Inc. on a part time basis. He was a lifetime member and former Trustee of the Thompsontown Fire Co.; a member of the Thompsontown Lions Club and the Regester’s Chevrolet Bowling Team. Jack was an avid vendor at the Carlisle Car Events and fleamarkets for more than 30 years. He had a passion for collecting antique items. Yohn and his wife Amber, of Lewistown; three sisters, Sherry Young and her husband Tim, of Burnham, Linda Houtz and her husband Scott, Teresa Elsasser, all of Mifflintown; and she leaves behind one precious granddaughter, Amanda Trego. MIFFLIN, Doris A. Bender, 80, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin and formerly of Mifflintown died at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the village. Born on May 28, 1933 in Mifflintown, Juniata County, she is the daughter of the late Glen H. and Della E. (Palm) Bender. She is survived a brother, Robert G. Bender and his wife Annabelle, of Mifflintown, also several nieces and nephews. One sister, Betty L. Finnicum preceded her in death on August 15, 2006. Miss Bender was a 1951 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown and an active member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, on the Mission committee and the Kitchen committee. She also attended the Four Seasons Senior Center, Mifflintown. In earlier life she was employed as a waitress at Milliken’s Restaurant, later she was employed by her sister Betty at Ebright’s Restaurant, and then she worked at Hoagie George Cossach’s Restaurant, all of Mifflintown. After waitressing she started a career as a seamstress working at L. Shellenberger’s, McAlisterville, then Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown before retiring from Lyons Fashions, Mifflintown. Doris loved her cats and had a gift of artistry, enjoying doing crafts and crocheting. She was also an ardent Penn State Football and Philadelphia Phillies fan. (Calhoun) MacGill, of Williamsport and the late Clyde E. MacGill. On August 25, 2012 he married his surviving wife, “Janie” (Stewart) MacGill, of Thompsontown. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth MacGill and her companion James Hastings, of Williamsport, John E. MacGill, II and his wife Brittaney, of Hanover, Kimberley MacGill and her companion Tommy Brock, of Colorado Springs, CO; four step children, Marlene Johnson and her husband Sherm, of McVeytown, Melissa Fry and her companion Josh Silva, of Shermansdale, Kara Amey and her husband Justin, of McAlisterville, James Wilson, of Mifflintown; two brothers, Jeff MacGill and his fiancée Kim Stacey, Mike MacGill and his wife Heather, all of Williamsport and he leaves behind 15 grandchildren. A daughter, Amber MacGill and a grandson, Matthew Harer-MacGill, preceded him in death. Mr. MacGill was a 1979 graduate of South Williamsport High School, a member of the Higher Ground Church, Thompsontown and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 143, Lewistown, and proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corp. He worked for several Central Pennsylvania construction companies during his career. John was a gifted craftsman who could fix anything; but, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. MILLERSTOWN, Donald C. Fogle, Sr., 88, of Millerstown, died at 10:55 a.m., on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Sun Home Hospice Care Center, Sunbury. Born on May 12, 1925 in Monroe Twp., Juniata County, he was the son of the late Edward Fogle and Bessie (Barton) Shirk. On May 14, 1949, he married his surviving wife and devoted caregiver, Mary F. (Minium) Fogle, with whom he shared nearly 65 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Donald C. Fogle, Jr. and his wife Bobbie Ann, of Mt. Pleasant Mills, Thomas Fogle and his wife Debra, of McAlisterville, Neal Fogle and his wife Lisa, of Winfield; one daughter, Rita Pyle and her husband Robert, of Mt. Pleasant Mills; nine grandchildren, Michelle Clayton and her husband Brian, Justin Fogle and his wife Rachel, Jennifer Wilson and her husband Scott, Rinda Graybill and her husband Nathan, Kelly Fogle, Reagan Pyle, Ryan Pyle, Hannah Fogle and Becca Fogle; as well as six great grandchildren, Conner and Landon Clayton, Alyvia and Everest Wilson, Annie Fogle and Caleb Graybill. He is the last of his generation having been preceded in death by seven half-brothers and four half-sisters. Mr. Fogle was a member of the Richfield Mennonite Church, where he served on the Missions Committee and led the youth group. He attended grammar school in Juniata County and later graduated from the Central Penn Bible Institute and the Harrisburg Barber School. In earlier life, he worked for the Sieber family farm, in McAlisterville until proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. After being discharged from the Army, he went to work as a crane operator for Bethlehem Steel Co., Steelton for 30 years until retiring in 1975. In 1968, he opened Fogle’s Barber Shop and operated it for 25 years until retiring in 1993. Donald enjoyed many things, hunting with his sons, working in the woods, gardening and remodeling projects. He also loved family get-to-gethers and sitting under the big maple tree telling stories from days gone by. In the Army, he learned to fly and enjoyed taking Mary for airplane rides. Traveling was also something that he and Mary shared a passion for, visiting Hawaii and much of the United States. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 from the Richfield Mennonite Church with Pastor Aaron Benner officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Peter’s Cemetery, Millerstown. MIFFLIN, Carrie B. Hackenberger, 28, of Mifflin died at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in Beale Township, Juniata County due to the result of injuries sustained from an automobile accident. Born on June 8, 1985 in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of Jacklyn A. (Stoner) Wilt and her step father Paul C. Wilt, of Mifflin and D. Curtis Hackenberger and her step mother H. Ada (Towsey) Hackenberger, of Port Royal. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Anthony C. Hackenberger and his companion Jenna Gibboney, of Newport, her paternal grandmother, Elsie (Kerchner) Hackenberger, of Thompsontown, her maternal grandfather, William H. Stoner, of Mifflintown and she leaves behind a precious niece whom she dearly loved, Hannah. Preceding her in a death were a sister, Danielle J. Hackenberger, a step brother, John M. Wilt, a maternal grandmother Mary Martha (Auker) Stoner and a paternal grandfather, Carl A. “Pete” Hackenberger. Miss Hackenberger was a 2003 graduate of Juniata High School, a 2008 graduate of Lock Haven University and currently she was working on her Master’s degree at Wilks University. Her memberships included the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863, American Legion Post 298, all of Mifflintown and the UFHO Indoor Field Hockey team. She also was a member of the National Barrel Horse Assoc. She currently was employed for her fifth year by the Greenwood School District as a sixth grade special education teacher at the Greenwood Middle School. She was also employed part time by the Red Zone, Mifflintown. Carrie was a modern day cowgirl who loved being outdoors hunting and fishing; however her true passion were horses; especially barrel racing and she had a true gift for training them. She was always on the go traveling all over the U.S. to equestrian events where in 1997 she was the Champion of the 1997 PA 4H Barrel Racing Contest and in 2002 she made it to the finals of the National High School Rodeo. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 from the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, corner of Third & Lemon Streets, Mifflintown with the Rev. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville with Pastor John Foltz and Pastor Mike Erhard officiating. Blair Yorks
THOMPSONTOWN, Blair E. Yorks, 89, of Thompsontown died at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown. Born on June 6, 1924, in Fayette Twp., Juniata County, he was a son of the late Cloyd and Rebecca (Miller) Yorks. On December 28, 1946, he married his surviving wife, Sarah Evelyn (Swartz) Yorks, with whom he shared more than 67 years of marriage. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, John E. Yorks and his wife Dorothy, of Mifflin, Blair M. Yorks, Sr. and his wife Russalee, of Mifflintown, Sara Maxine Mathieu, of Thompsontown; six grandchildren, John Yorks, Jr., Tina Kint, Melissa Kitting, Blair Yorks, Jr., Randy Zeigler and Angie Walters; 14 great grandchildren, Andi Marie Yorks, Shelby Yorks, Dalton Yorks, Kyle Kint, Shane Kint, Alyssa Flaherty, Megan Armstrong, Brooke Kitting, Nevin Yorks, Owen Yorks, Korinne Walters, Blake Walters, Shelby Hollobaugh and Shianne Bender and one great granddaughter, Alexandria Hockenberry. He was the last of his generation, having been preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters. Blair was a member of the McAlisterville United Methodist Church, where he had served on the board of trustees and along with his wife, served as the church custodian. He was also a former member of the Lost Creek Trout Club. Mr. Yorks proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. In earlier life he was employed as a truck driver for Savercool Trucking, Millerstown and later until his retirement, worked for the PA Dept. of Transportation, Mifflintown. Being an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was a true sports fan who loved all sports, especially baseball and professional wrestling; however, his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 11 am from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville with the Rev. Edward D’Agostino and Pastor Ronald Shupe officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, where the Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military burial honors. A viewing will be held from 4 – 8 p.m. with family present to receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 and from 10 a.m. until the time of service, Wednesday, at the funeral home. Florence Benner
SPRINGFIELD, MO, Florence S. (Shellenberger) Benner, 80, of Springfield, MO, peacefully passed away to join her Lord in her home, Wednesday, March 5, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving family. Florence enjoyed being with her family, baking for her family and friends, and teaching her great-granddaughters to bake cookies. She is remembered for her FINE pies. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister. Florence is survived by her husband, Park Wayne Benner of 63 ½ years; daughter, Carol Smith of Morgantown, WV; son, David Wayne Benner and wife Sharon of Latrobe, PA; daughter, Connie Benton and husband, Kevin of Springfield, MO; and daughter, Faith Benner of Springfield, MO; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Feltman of Millerstown, PA; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their thanks to Hospice Compassus for the loving and tender care given to Florence and her family during this time of illness and death. Susan Huss
MIFFLINTOWN, Susan K. Huss, 33, of Mifflintown, died on Monday, March 10, 2014 at her home. Born May 12, 1980 in Lewistown, Mifflin County, she is the daughter of Kathy J. (Arnold) Huss, of Mifflintown. In addition to her mother, Susan is survived by: her companion, Philip Fry, two sons, Stuart Dare, Tristan Myers, one brother, Shannon L. Huss, and a niece, Kathryn Huss, all of Mifflintown. She was a 1998 graduate of Juniata High School, Mifflintown. Family and friends are invited to gather in Susan’s memory from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014 at the Mifflintown Hose Co., corner of Washington and Cross Streets., Mifflintown. Janet Eshenower
ELIZABETHTOWN, Janet M. Eshenower, 73, of Elizabethtown and formerly of McAlisterville, died at 12:00 noon, on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at her home. Born on March 24, 1940, in Fayette Twp., Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late R. Elmer and Mary L. (Hower) Winey. Her husband, Donald L. Eshenower, whom she married on December 5, 1980, survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by, two sons, Randy Zendt and his wife Colleen, of Elizabethtown, Craig Zendt and his wife Tina, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two step daughters, Kim Bair and her husband Wade, of McAlisterville, Dawn Eshenower-Osburn, of Newport, and she leaves behind, eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One son, Joseph Zendt, in infancy and one grandson, Seth Zendt, preceded her in death. She was a 1959 graduate of East Juniata High School. Janet had been attending the Life Point Church, Harrisburg and was a member of the Juniata County Business and Professional Women, and a former member of the Richfield Women’s Club. In earlier life, Mrs. Eshenower, was employed by the West Snyder High School as a secretary. Later, she co-owned and operated the Zendt Nursing Home, Richfield after which she was employed as a secretary for Walker Wood Products, Mifflintown. Janet was an avid reader and an ardent animal lover, who enjoyed watching birds and especially loved her dogs. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville with Dr. Glenn E. Pfeiffer officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing; however, family will be present to receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of service, Wednesday, at the funeral home. Lucien Stutts
MIFFLINTOWN, Lucien J. “Jack” Stutts, 85, of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown, and formerly of Mifflintown died at 1:40 p.m., on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the manor. Born on June 8, 1928, in Mifflintown, Juniata County he was the son of the late Lucian B. and Elsa (Nestler) Stutts. On January 6, 1950; he wed Donna Jean (Rhinesmith) Stutts, with whom she shared more than 61 years of marriage, before she preceded him in death on February 15, 2011. He is survived by two children, Diane S. Littleton and her husband Pastor Donald W. Littleton, of Great Bend, PA, David R. Stutts and his wife Valerie Stutts, of Mifflintown, one sister M. Evelyn Switzer, of Mifflintown, and he leaves behind six grandchildren and two great- granddaughters. Two brothers, Robert Stutts, Frank Stutts, and two sisters, Dorothy Hambright and Jean Groninger preceded him in death. Mr. Stutts was a 1946 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, a member and former board of trustee of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, also a member of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post No. 5863 all of Mifflintown and he was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. Jack enjoyed refinishing wood projects and spending time fishing at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del. He will long be remembered for having his daily seat at McDonald’s, Mifflintown, however, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, and loving all of their activities. A graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March29, 2014, from the Union Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Mifflintown, with his son-in-law Pastor Donald W. Littleton officiating. Born on October 30, 1961, in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, he was a son of the late Harry L. Milliken and Mary Lou (Burd) Lay. On December 12, 1981, he married his surviving wife Teresa (Trego) Milliken, with whom he spent more than 32 years of marriage. Surviving are his children: Thomas M. Milliken and his wife Leslie, of Thompsontown, Timothy P. Milliken, of Honey Grove, a step mother, Joan M. (Wilt) Milliken, of Honey Grove, a sister, Lou Ann Julian and her husband Ronald, of Middletown, a brother, Robert H. Milliken, of Charlotte, NC, a step sister, Robin Wilt, of Honey Grove and he leaves behind two grandchildren. Tom was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and when his health permitted he was a true outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish: however he was a great sports enthusiast enjoying NASCAR, football and basketball. Dorothy Imes
DOYLES MILLS, Dorothy Harriet Imes, 80, entered into the joy of her salvation and into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 3:05 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at her home. Having been justified by His marvelous grace according to the hope of eternal life. Dorothy was born in Benfer, Snyder County on March 16, 1934 to the late Homer and Mary (Benfer) Keister. On December 24, 1953 she married Merle Imes, who preceded her in death on August 24, 2010. Dorothy was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. The heartache of her loss will be shared by her children: Larry M. Imes, Carol M. Lyter and her husband Tom, Mary C. Ennist and her husband Mike, W. Edward Imes, all of Mifflin; one sister-in-law, Fay Campbell and her husband Tom, also of Mifflin; three grandchildren, Ryan Ennist and his wife Chrissy, of Drexel Hill, Jenna Imes, of Allentown, Brook Ennist, of Marysville and one step granddaughter, Michelle Holler and her husband Travis, of Mifflin. Dorothy was also looking forward to the arrival of her first great-granddaughter, in July. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Anna Reich Matter, Beatrice Snook and Geraldine Keister, who died in infancy. Dorothy was a woman of great faith and a prayer warrior. She was an avid reader and loved to play Skip-bo. Dorothy loved to read her bible every day and had read through it many times. Dorothy shared her love of Christ with her family and lived her life according to the word of God. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2014 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with her two nephews the Rev. Darvin Reich, Rev. Timothy Reich and the Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
